What Can I Build In My Garden Without Planning Permission?

Shields Buildings' Guide to Planning Permission for Garden Buildings

When it comes to garden buildings, there are a whole heap of decisions to make.

How big do you want it? Where’s it going? What is it for? Does it need wider doors? Does it need to be customised?

Do I need Planning Permission for my Garden Building?

At Shields Buildings, we’re no strangers to planning permission applications in the South West. We’re more experienced than pretty much anyone when it comes to getting your planning permission approved.

And we can take care of that entire process for you.

BUT, if you’re looking for a quicker solution that doesn’t involve planning permission, we’ve got a few options:

What Are My Garden Building Options Without Planning Permission?

If you’re going to build a garden building and you don’t want to have to apply for planning permission:

All of this is due to ‘right to light’ restrictions and requirements to ensure you don’t impact your neighbours in any way with your building.

Obtaining planning permission isn’t the end of the world, though.

We’ve helped hundreds of homeowners build their dream timber garden buildings. We've built offices, sheds, carports and custom-built studios – right from the planning stage to the final touches.

If you need planning permission, we’ll help every step of the way. We’ll assess your site, provide professional guidance, and prepare the required documentation to ensure a seamless and hassle-free experience.

Zero Range = Zero Planning!

If you’re looking for options that don’t require planning permission, we’d like to introduce you to our ZERO range…

Why is it called ZERO, I hear you ask? It’s because:

Zero maintenance Composite garden room North Tawton

Our ZERO range is a composite material insulated garden building you can quickly order and get installed. Plus, it will stand the test of time without any ongoing maintenance!

In a lot of ways, it’s the best of both worlds.

When it comes to garden buildings, from the humble shed to the grandest summer house, there are a lot of decisions to be made. Which is to say we know that the decision-making process around your garden building can be pretty extensive… and you might just want to skip right to the point.

That way, you can start enjoying your garden building a whole lot sooner, right?

But the gap between a bespoke creation and an ‘out of the box’ solution can be stark, and we know we wanted to design something that fit perfectly in that gap.

Enter ZERO - No planning permission, no complex designs, no worries about maintenance.

Is ZERO Or A Timber Garden Building Right For Me?

Our ZERO range is made from composite boards rather than timber, and fitted with an EDPM rubber roof.

This means we can achieve a virtually flat roof, allowing for more height inside the building for storage, hobbies or whatever you plan on using your garden room for.

There are lots of similarities between the two ranges. ZERO comes fully insulated with double-glazed windows and doors, as well as an electrical package so you can plug in whatever you need to – whether that’s tech, garden tools, sewing machines or anything you fancy!

Painted interior

It comes complete with flooring and the interior is painted so it’s ready to use straight away. Our goal with ZERO was always to ensure that it’s hassle-free without compromising on the style, quality and look of our garden buildings.

Timber is a material that delivers on both style and durability, which is why we’ve always maintained it’s the best possible option for garden buildings. But ZERO is a real competitor…

It’s contemporary, complete with an attractive side panel and decking for a stylish addition to any garden – it’s far from a straight off-the-shelf solution! With all the benefits of an off-the-shelf solution.

How Does ZERO Avoid Planning Permission?

There are a few nifty features that mean ZERO doesn’t require planning permission.

One of our favourites is ZERO is 2.5m tall as standard, so is not an issue if it is within 2m of your boundary.

Thanks to technology in the floor and roof, much of that height can be gained inside without adding to the outer height from the ground – meaning you get the best of both worlds!

Oh, and aside from that, delivery and installation are included as standard… as they are with all of our garden buildings.

If you want to find out more about your garden building options, whether it’s the hassle-free, planning permission-free benefits of ZERO…
