Our FAQ’s
General Information
How long has Shields Buildings been trading?
It’s hard to believe, but Shields Buildings has been trading since 1991! A wealth of experience has been built up over that time to provide buildings that truly stand the test of time.
Do you have a brochure I can look through?
Yes, you can download a full brochure, or specific sections with Price Guide from our website. If you would like a hard copy sent to you, just drop us an email with your address and we will get one in the post for you.
I’m after a building that’s a specific size not shown in the Price Guide, is that possible?
Yes! All our buildings are bespoke and made to order, so your wish is our command, as long as it fits in to the style of buildings that we offer you can have it.
I want a garden building, what do I do next?
Just give us call, or pop over to our display site. We’ll ask you lots of questions so we understand exactly what you want to achieve with your bespoke timber garden building or garage. As all our buildings are handmade to order, your building will be just the right size and specification to suit your requirements.
Do you charge for site visits?
No! There is no charge, we want to make sure your site is suitable for the building of your dreams. We will make recommendations for any slight changes to the design or location of your building if necessary.
How do I get a custom quote?
Just give us a call, pop over to the Display site, or fill out the Request a Custom Quote form on the Product Pages of our website.
Do you provide drawings with your quotes?
Yes, our quotes come with CAD drawings so you can see exactly what your building will look like. They show the detail of where the doors and windows are, as well as full dimensions.
Once I have received my quote, can I change some details?
Absolutely, that is one of the reasons we do the drawings! We want to make sure that your building is exactly as you want it.
How long will it take to put up my building?
Generally under a week. It does depend on the type of building, but as our buildings are sectional, they are premade here at the farm and then constructed on site, minimising the amount of disruption to you.
Can I put my building up myself?
Yes, in most cases a delivery only option is possible. Just ask when requesting your quote.
Will my garden room be warm enough to use all year round?
If you choose to have insulation and double glazing in your garden building then yes, it will be nice and cosy whatever the weather.
I have an existing shed where I want my new timber garden building. Do I need to move it?
No, you can leave it to us. Just give us all the details and we will advise you.
How do I look after my Shields’ building?
All the timber we use is tanalised, to give a longer life and protect against rot. We also treat it with two coats of clear water proofer. We advise treating your building every few years with the same water proofer.
Is the timber you use from environmentally responsible sources?
Yes, all the timber used is from renewable sources, being certified by either the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC).
Product Details
What options do I have for the internal wall lining?
The standard wall lining for insulated buildings is MDF. For a luxurious finish you can upgrade to a seamless ‘Neatmatch’ tongue and groove lining or pine tongue and groove lining. We also offer traditional pine tongue and groove boarding.
For workshops and garages we offer a superb beech faced hardwood ply lining. Insulation is also available in these buildings.
What options do I have for the external finish?
The timber cladding is pressure treated, slow growing northern European Redwood. This can be left as it is, or you can choose to have your building painted or stained.
Will you do the base for my shed?
For smaller buildings with a timber floor, such as sheds and studios, we construct a base of timber bearers on concrete blocks. This is suitable for most relatively level sites.
Can I choose my windows and doors?
Yes, and also where they are positioned! Sheds and workshops have timber doors and windows. Insulated buildings have uPVC double glazed units that come in a variety of styles and colours.
What is the roof made from?
The standard roofing material is plastisol steel coated sheets which come in a range of colours. Apex roof buildings can also have a synthetic slate roof option.
Do you provide the electrics?
An electrical pack is provided as standard in our insulated buildings and can be incorporated into other buildings, just ask for a quote.
