The 5 Step Process

It doesn’t matter what stage you are in the journey of planning your timber garden building, you will get lots of support with the Shields 5 Step Process. 

So what does this mean for you? When you contact us, we will ask you a lot of questions and there is a very good reason for this! It’s all about you getting a building that’s exactly what you want and need. We don’t have standard sized buildings that you have to ‘make do’ with - we will lovingly craft your dream timber building just for you – with the windows where you want them, at the height that you wish and to the exact dimensions that you need for it to fit snugly into that perfect spot in your garden.

Step 1 – We need to find out what you want to use your building for

You may need it to be insulated and have power if you plan to work in there; your shed could be fitted with shelves for garden tools; your garage may need to be extra-long so you can have a workbench at the end, or for some valuable extra storage space. We will design your building taking all these things into consideration.

Step 2 – What size would you like your building?

You may think this is a straightforward question, but in fact it could throw up many issues. Customers often come to see us with a fixed idea of what they think they need, but after chatting to us they leave excited and buzzing with options they had not thought possible.

Step 3 – Let’s discuss the base

Will your building need a concrete base? Yes, if it’s a garage or carport, probably not for any other building. We need to know a little about your garden - for buildings with a timber floor we will prepare the base of the building for you (on a level site) using concrete blocks and timber bearers to level out any slight variations.

Step 4 – Where do you want your building to go?

If you’re thinking of having your building within 2m of your boundary you may need to consider applying for Planning Permission if your building is over 2.5m high. We will gladly offer assistance with this or apply on your behalf, so it may not be quite as daunting as you first thought.

Step 5 – And the all-important question, when would you like your building?

Being bespoke and hand made to order, there will be a lead time whilst we actually make your building for you. There may be jobs you would like to do in preparation for getting the space ready, so we will work with you to arrange a date that is convenient. As soon as your order is placed the workshop team can start building it – and the journey really gets underway.
