Bringing Business Home: Designing The Perfect Garden Office For Your Business

Building a Garden Office: Time to Work from Home in Style

Running a business from home? This can be the best and most challenging thing you do. Here's why now might be the best time to invest in a garden office.

Once upon a time, the idea of setting up in your spare room seemed an incredibly daunting thing, but in recent years, home businesses have developed into a fantastic opportunity as more of us work from home than ever before.

If you’ve taken the step of running a business from home, whether that’s starting from scratch, moving things out of convenience or for any other reason, then we’ve got a simple question:

Where are you planning to work from?

A back bedroom, kitchen or spare bit of space is great for a short while, but if you’re planning on making this a permanent move AND a success, you’re probably going to want something a bit more you.

Perhaps something a bit more purpose-built?

Designing The Perfect Garden Building

Whether your business is creative, technical, hands-on, hands-off, high-tech or anything else, you need a space to do what you do best.

Sure, you can make do with what you’ve got, but a bespoke wooden garden office (or any purpose-built garden building) can elevate what you do to a level you can be proud of.

And the great news is that whatever you’re looking to create, we can make it happen.

When we say whatever, we mean whatever – we were incredibly proud (and excited) to create a wooden garden office specifically for a client’s parrots.

Discover how we built Mr P the perfect garden office.

Why Choose a Wooden Garden Office?

An office is an essential space for anyone running a business (or side hustle, project work, freelance work) from home. Or even if you’re just working from home regularly in any capacity.

The opportunity to work from home has become normalised in recent years and it’s opened doors for many business owners and entrepreneurs to take that leap of faith. But eventually, you outgrow the dining room table or spare room.

Which is precisely where a wooden garden office comes in.

Because it’s insulated, you don’t need to worry about what happens when it’s inevitably dark and cold for half of the year, so you can work 365 days a year, 24/7 if you need to… although the occasional break or holiday is probably advisable.

We use foil-backed high-specification insulation in the floor, walls and roof, as well as installing maintenance-free uPVC windows and doors in whatever colour you fancy (from our range at least).

If you want to know more about energy efficiency, just as about our Low-E double glazing –it’s 3 times more efficient than standard double glazing, so you don’t need to worry about energy costs in your new garden office.

I’m Not Sure if A Garden Office is Right For Me…

At Shields Buildings, we like to call a spade a spade.

The reality is that your garden building is unique to you – it has to fit your needs and there might be some specific things you need, there might be challenges in the terrain, and there might be things you’re unsure of.

We’re here to help with every single step.

We always begin by speaking with you to find out what you want to achieve from your garden building so that we can design a bespoke structure that fits your requirements today, tomorrow, and a decade from now.

After all, the last thing you want to do is go to the effort of getting a new office only to outgrow it or realise you’ve forgotten something a year down the line.

It’s why bespoke is always best.

There’s no making do, no ‘it’ll do for now’, no making it work – it does everything it needs to and more.

Lighting, electrical sockets and a wall heater are included so you don’t need to worry about not being able to stay connected, charge things or see what’s going on after 4 PM in January!

You’ll get to choose roof colours, interior linings (and colours) and make sure it feels very much like yours.

After all, why have a wooden garden office outdoor purpose-built room if it’s not, well, purpose-built?! With prices starting at £12,500, you can make it a space that’s really your own without compromising.

Does My Garden Building Need Planning Permission?

We’re incredibly hot on the technical side of things with our wooden garden structures. Our garden offices come complete with maintenance-free uPVC windows, Low-E double-glazed windows and doors, lighting, electrical sockets, and wall heaters.

So you’re well-lit, warm, fully charged, and ready to crack on.

If you’re keeping the height of your building under 2.5m, our wooden garden offices also come with a lower profile apex roof or sloping roof, which means you don’t usually need planning permission.

That could save you a fair bit of time, so it’s worth thinking about what you need and having that conversation with us…

All of our buildings are entirely bespoke, which means they’re designed for you, built for you, and installed for you by our experienced team of craftsmen.
