At Shields Buildings, we’ve been creating great spaces on the land we’ve farmed for more than 100 years. That means your garden building, whether it’s an office, carport, workspace, storage area, craft room or anything else you can imagine, benefits from all the lived experience and expertise that we’ve amassed.
Over the years, we developed a pretty good knack for making outdoor structures and timber buildings for the farm and various projects, which led us to a thought…
What if we did this for other people?
Fast forward a fair few years (more than 30, to be precise) and here we are on the very same patch of land, doing exactly that.
We make timber garden buildings (and our new ZERO range) to order and install all over Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, staying true to the values we’ve held since our very first day – bespoke, hand-crafted buildings that look beautiful AND stand the test of time.
I Want A Garden Building, Now What?
Finding the right garden building might not be as simple as popping down to the local garden centre and picking one out to be delivered the next day.
If you’ve got anything specific in mind or any challenges with the size, shape, location or if you want it to be a bit more custom than the standard off-the-shelf options, then you’re probably not going to find what you’re looking for there…

We’ll ask you lots of questions about what you’re looking to achieve to help build a picture of what your design might look like so we can prepare a bespoke quote.
We know it’s a big decision, which is why we always love it when people pop down to our display site to get a better idea of what they like, what works for them and maybe even find a bit of inspiration!
We’ve created all sorts of fantastic spaces with different goals in mind, from a Wildlife Artist’s Studio to Classic Car Garages, Ride On Mower Sheds and just about everything you could imagine – and we’ve loved helping every single project come to fruition.
What Happens Once I’ve Placed An Order?
Firstly, have a moment to celebrate!
It’s an exciting moment once you’ve decided to order a bespoke timber garden building or ZERO Garden Room and the beginning of something pretty momentous.
After that, we’ll crack on with the production of your garden building. All of our buildings are sectional, which means they’re premade here at the farm before being constructed on-site – this means there’s a whole lot less disruption to you.
Of course, if you’d rather assemble it yourself, this is possible for some of the buildings – just ask about it when you request your quote.
Do I Need Planning Permission for Garden Buildings?
We’re going to have to get splinters on this one from sitting on the fence because it does depend.
A lot of buildings don’t need permission, but it’s important to check first. Much of it will depend on where you’re building on your property. If you’re in doubt, it’s worth checking with us in the initial stages to get an answer.
