Shields Buildings was established in 1991 and is still going strong over 30 years later. We make and install bespoke timber garden buildings all over Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset. We stay true to our values: bespoke, well-made hand-crafted buildings that look beautiful AND stand the test of time.

Our staff are important to us. We always aim to provide a stable work environment, with plenty of opportunities for learning and personal growth. We treat our employees with concern, respect, and care, and in turn, they do the same for every single one of our Shields Buildings customers.
In everything we do, we seek to bring joy to people with a bespoke timber garden building that makes their lives better. A lofty aim, but one that keeps us striving forward every single day.
The people behind Shields Buildings can be broken down into 3 distinct teams. Including:
- the office team,
- the workshop team,
- and the site team.
Every single person and team work together as a well-oiled machine. Working together to go beyond just focusing on the building, but also on the customer. We want to make sure that every customer is properly looked after right from their initial enquiry through to the design and costing of their building, its construction and installation all the way to our attentive follow-up procedure.

When John founded the business, he had a vision of creating the best timber buildings in the South West, and this is still at the heart of everything we do. Pushing the business ahead, his proficiency is noticeable in everything from customer service to the excellence of our products.
John has handed over the reins to general manager Paul, so it’s most likely his voice that you’ll hear on the end of the phone, or the face that you’ll see when you visit our display.
About our office team
Paul started with the company gaining experience in the workshop and then he joined the site team. He knows everything about the manufacture and build of our products, so who better help make your dream of a timber garden building a reality?
Paul oversees the day-to-day running of the business and is also responsible for quotes and customer communication. He is aided in the office by Hayley who is a whizz at spreadsheets and loves making sure everything and everyone is where they should be. She looks after all the customer admin processes and handles the accounts.

More on the Installation and Workshop team
The Installation team are the customer-facing part of the business and, as many of our customers testify, are excellent and a pleasure to have to work at their homes. Nothing is too much trouble for Site Supervisor, Mike. He will make sure they deliver the perfect finish on every building. He takes huge pleasure in his work, exuding a contagious positivity – but be warned, this can sometimes lead to singing, so ear defenders are advised…
Aaron brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the team. His bubbly personality could brighten up anybody’s day. He seems to delight in the challenge of tackling an obstacle such as a steep garden or awkward load. Nothing seems to faze him! They are joined by Neil, the newest member of the team. Neil splits his time between the site and workshop and brings with him excellent carpentry skills and is a great support to the rest of the team. Always willing to go the extra mile.
Overseeing the Workshop and Installation teams is Production Manager Paul H. He makes sure every element of each customer’s order is correct, ensuring the precision and high quality that is essential in our work. As Shields’ longest-serving employee, Paul sets the bar incredibly high for the rest of the team.
The workshop team
The workshop is the core of our business. Meticulously ensuring that each and every one of our bespoke timber buildings is constructed to the highest standard.
Ivan is a perfectionist, and it’s his tenacity that helps maintain our excellent reputation for high-quality timber garden buildings. Nothing is more important to Ivan than knowing that our customers will be getting the perfect garden building every time.
Ivan is joined by Jerry, our ‘Jack of All Trades’ – but in this instance, a master of all as well. Jerry has a lengthy experience in the building trade. This means he feels just at home working at a workbench as he does fitting slates onto a building’s roof. And did we mention he’s good with a paintbrush?
