ZERO COMPOSITE GARDEN ROOMS - FEATURED CASE STUDIES
This project started back in 2023 when a simple carport enquiry came in.
But, as often happens, other things got in the way, and it was another 12 months before the customers were ready to proceed.
As it turns out, while they were ready, it wasn’t quite plain sailing from that point on, as you’ll read below, but by working together with Shields, they got there in the end.
Mr C originally came to us with plans for a timber carport.
But as soon as he visited the display site, he was taken immediately by our ZERO garden room, recognising it as an ideal place to house his model railway set.
Following his initial visits, Mr C supplied detailed requirements and after another meeting at the display site and a few design phone calls, the ZERO stood out as the perfect choice.
"The process of choosing my garden room to completion was seamless, Shields kept me informed throughout and the installation team were amazing in their attention to detail in getting everything just right as well as being very polite and friendly. I can’t recommend Shields enough as the garden room exceeded my expectations and is admired by all that see it. The Zero garden room is a must for anyone who wants quality without planning and maintenance."
Mr C's ZERO Garden RoomMr P arrived at our display site already keen on the ZERO – our turnkey, all-inclusive garden room option.
He was able to apply his own personal touches by choosing the colours of the external cladding and internal flooring. And then all that was needed was for one of our team to visit Mr P’s property to make sure everything would work and fit in his preferred spot.
Once confirmed, Mr P could sit back and relax and wait for installation.
"I had a Zero installed a couple of weeks ago. So far it is everything I expected, and the construction went as I was told it would. You couldn’t ask for more."
Mr P's ZERO Garden RoomThe customer in question had a good idea of what he wanted – a bespoke workshop that could be used partly for woodworking, and partly for exercise; two fairly diverse interests that needed tying together.
Nick visited the display site, with his drawings and designs, and together we came up with a building that fulfilled all the requirements.
The design itself was extremely bespoke, featuring an insulated floor by our team, with larger wall timbers so that the customer could insulate and line the rest himself, as and when he had the time to do so.
In addition, the design also featured internal partition walls, creating two separate rooms, with precise window and door placements in order to accommodate the customer’s woodworking machinery.
"The building looks great and is a credit to you and your team."
Nick's Workshop and gymMr G visited us on one of our Open Saturdays and was highly impressed by the garages on show – together we spent a long time looking at buildings, and working out the right options for him, as well as additions, like synthetic slate roof tiles and anthracite uPVC windows to help the garages blend in with the modern main building.
"We have just had two double garages installed. The quality of construction is excellent and from my research it shows that the specification is far better than some suppliers. The team that managed our planning, design and installation were easy to deal with, left no mess and always did everything on time. They also helped source a base provider and coordinated the installation with them. I strongly recommend Shields Buildings."
Mr G's double garagesWe recently had the honour of working with the wonderful Cath Kidston to create her a beautiful, attractive log store, and the end result is rather stunning.
Given the size, scale, and location of Cath’s log store, she needed to apply for planning permission. We took care of all that, taking the necessary photographs, submitting the plans, and getting it over the line, as well as providing base plans, so that her builder could install the foundations.
"We are delighted with the store, here’s a photo for you with it now pretty full of logs!"
Cath's Log storeMr Barker and his partner were moving to a new build in North Tawton and had their heart set on an outdoor socialising area, which provided shade, while still allowing them to enjoy the warm weather.
Mr B had fond memories of a similar structure that his Nan had, which she’d always called a “loggia”.
After an initial call they came to see us at the display to discuss their plans – while our previous open-sided structures had all been for car parking, it was straightforward enough to modify the design to suit a garden structure.
"Great service from start to finish. The whole process was efficient and ran on time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good quality bespoke building. Shields Buildings deliver exactly what it say's on the tin - Thank You."
Mr B's loggiaThis one was a slightly different job, with Mrs Shields as the customer!
For a long time, Jacqueline wanted somewhere safe and dry to house her car, but with only a single carport, it wasn’t a possibility. With a new car on the horizon for 2021 it was now going to have to get to the top of the list of priorities.
Rather than installing another carport or garage and taking up more space, John and Jacqueline decided on a double carport, which would provide more than enough room for both vehicles.
Mr P had been working in his loft for a while, but wanted more space, and somewhere more permanent for him to crack on, undisturbed.
He and his wife came to us, asked us to create them a garden studio/office, and we got straight to work. We have helped lots of people go from ‘kitchen table working’ to ‘purpose-built workspace’.
"We are delighted with our new garden office from Shields Buildings. The design process was simple and took into account all our needs. Onsite installation was simple, smooth and we have been kept informed by Paul at all stages. Everyone we have dealt with at Shields has been lovely. If you are looking for a quality bespoke building, I can highly recommend Shields Buildings."
Mr P's Garden officeMost of our customers want a garden building for themselves.
Not Rosalie. Instead, this project was entirely devoted to her passion: parrots.
Her African grey parrots needed their own special space, with direct access to their aviary, so she came to us for help.
"We keep parrots that are now a protected species and endangered in the wild. We wanted to move them from inside our home to a secure bespoke birdroom where they would have direct access to the aviary. No detail was missed. The guys were amazing, so polite, hard working and friendly. A few days later and the bird room was ready for the big move. We are delighted with the workmanship and attention to detail. I would highly recommend Shields Buildings."
Mrs B's parrot houseJames and Liz wanted a garden room they could use all year round, so they could enjoy the beautiful views of the moor from the top of their garden.
The room needed to be multipurpose – cosy enough to spend time and relax in when they were alone, and big enough to entertain their grandchildren in comfort.
"I'm sure when John first saw the site, his heart must have sunk as the access is awful and the site was on a slope. But with a lot of ingenuity the building is now finished and it's fabulous. Great team of specialist builders who turned up when they said they would turn up and smiled all the way through what must have been quite a testing job."
James and Liz's garden havenWith a damp and really useless old garage that was too small for her car and ruining her view Katherine wanted to replace it with a functional and more attractive timber garden building. A new building was designed which had the addition of a useful log store on the side.
"It is all fab, thank you for the shed, and the incredibly efficient and mess-free work getting rid of the old one and putting this up. I smile every time I look at the shed - SO much better and more attractive than what it replaced!"
Katherine -Large ShedSimon had recently moved and had a lovely big new garden, but with no outbuildings. As he’d downsized, what he really needed was a workshop to store everything which previously had a place in his old property. John was able to advise on the size of a suitable building to keep within permitted development rights.
"I just wanted to drop you a line to say how pleased we are with the finished product. We are very impressed with the quality of the building. We found it very useful to be able to visit your show-buildings and to discuss our requirements, and the team who came to erect the building were very efficient and friendly. So in spite of Covid throwing a spanner in the works, we are delighted with the new workshop!"
Simon - bespoke workshopHaving a lovely house and garden, Helen didn’t want the view ruined by a solid garage, but she did need somewhere to protect their cars from the weather. It was also key that the carport complemented the house, rather than looking like the odd one out.
"Once again, I must say how pleased we are with both the carport and the summerhouse. Not only are they perfectly designed for the job they do, as buildings they are also extremely handsome to look at and have been much admired. Please convey our thanks once again to all your team."
Helen - Open sided carportWith a beautiful landscaped garden, Helen wanted a timber garden building to use as an extra room and enhance their enjoyment of the garden. They had an attractive stained-glass window they wanted to incorporate, and we included this in the design of the back window for them.
"I would like to thank you and all the team who worked so diligently and professionally on our summerhouse and more recently our carport. Both buildings are a pleasure to look at and the standard of workmanship is excellent. The finished results are everything we hoped for. Very many thanks for all you have done."
Helen - SummerhouseRachel had an old shed in her garden overdue for replacement. She wanted a functional building, but not at the expense of something nice to look at. John suggested a canopy over the front and painted windows and door to give the shed a more unique look.
"You and your team have delivered just what we asked for, a shed that doesn’t look too shed like, it is perfect. The craftsmanship, quality & finishing touches shine through. It’s definitely more than just a garden shed and your staff are a credit to your brand; courteous, tidy and professional craftsmen. Thanks again for delivering a high-quality product to time and budget."
Rachel - Bespoke garden shedAndrew, a professional artist in North Devon came to Shields Buildings and his brief was that we should create a proper wildlife artist’s studio for his stunning riverside setting. He wanted a large picture window to maximise views of the river, so we worked through a series of CAD designs and layouts before approving the final version together.
Tracy came along to one of our monthly open days and gave us her brief. When she moved to a new home in Bideford, she needed somewhere to burrow away and keep up with her first great love: pottery. We got to work preparing a quote and drawings of the little workshop/studio that would soon become her garden solace.
Price was important in this project. So we agreed together that the studio walls would have no insulation, as it’s easy to add it in at a later date if needed.
John Shields suggested insulating the floor though, since that can’t be done retrospectively. With an insulated floor and double glazing, Tracy’s plenty warm enough for now.
"I would like to say I am extremely happy with my studio and the service I have received from your company. From the very beginning your installation team were all exceedingly polite and considerate and completed the job in a very professional manner. It has been a pleasure dealing with you all - which is a rarity these days. I look forward to many happy years of creation in my wonderful new studio."
Tracy - Part-Insulated Pottery StudioMr E was looking for a suitable storage shed for his new mower. Thing is, the space he’d picked for it to go was atop a steep slope. Together, we worked towards a solution that would allow him to drive the mower into the shed. That’s what a ride-on mower’s for, right?
"I did a fair bit of looking before I chose Shields for a new carport and lock-up shed. The workmanship and the workmen were hardworking and clearly keen to provide exactly what you want. The detail and quality finish makes this a real joy to finally get the finished product. Even the aftercare and return visits to ensure the client is happy is worth its weight. This is craftsmanship at its best."
Mr E's ride on mower shedThey retired and downsized in South Devon, they found a great property. But there was one thing missing. Outbuildings! Within weeks of moving to their new home, Peter and Julie arrived at Shields Buildings to look at our display products. Being experts in outdoor buildings and storage solutions, we understood just how urgently they needed somewhere to put their possessions. The thing is, they didn’t know exactly what they were looking for, but wanted somewhere to protect their cars and to store their goods. John was able to offer some useful suggestions for them.
"We’ve been so impressed with the service and quality of the work done by Shields. From start to finish the experience was fantastic. The fact that John Shields came to our property and carried out the survey and explained everything showed us that this company cared and gave personal service. We are so pleased with the end product and are making full use of the new space. Thanks to all the team!"

Mr and Mrs F - Insulated Storage ShedBeing a keen motorbiker Steve was looking for a new secure garage for his pride and joy and give him somewhere to store not only his bike clothing and gardening tools but a place to retreat to for a quick workout. Having been to see the display site at Shields Buildings Steve knew that he would get the quality and attention to detail for his timber frame garage that he was looking for.
"I love the idea of someone who does a full survey, draws up the plans, takes it from start to finish and makes it all simple for me – perfect."
Steve Williams - Bespoke Double GarageMoving to their new farm was a dream come true, but it did not have all the buildings they needed; stables, hay store, tack room, workshop and a tractor shed were all required. Mr and Mrs Davies were looking for a company who understood their requirements and who could supply the variety of buildings they needed. After a visit to the Shields Buildings display site they knew they had found the company for them.
"The stables were designed exactly as we wanted them and we are particularly impressed with the finish and attention to detail that Shields Buildings have shown. We are very happy and so too are the horses!"
Mr Davies - Bespoke Timber Stable BlockWhat will you keep in your workshop? Max Turner, a valued customer of Shields Buildings came to us as he wanted another timber garden building, this time he was going to use his workshop for a rather unusual purpose.
Mr and Mrs Walters of Exeter were delighted with the timber frame double carport and store purchased from Shields Buildings in 2015. When they wanted a shed for their garden they were straight on the phone again, knowing they would get the same high quality building and service.
"What impressed us most was the care and detail applied. John carried out a site visit and helped us make various choices. We had some requirements of our own which he was more than happy to accommodate. The team who look after the build and installation were extremely friendly, efficient and hard-working. The quality of their work is top class. In summary, a top quality product from a top quality company."
Mr Walters - Garden Shed with Pent RoofWhilst this may look like a typical Summer House, we were in fact asked to design the timber building to provide somewhere suitable for the customer to work from home as well as enjoy the garden setting. Therefore, the building benefits from insulation and has full height double glazed windows, making it an ideal home office; warm, dry, comfortable and light.
"Thank you for the very professional and efficient way Beverley's garden room has been designed and put up by John and all the team. We are very pleased with the building and your service and will definitely recommend you."
Charles - Garden Summer HouseWhen Paul and Charlotte moved to their new house the first thing they wanted was a new hobby room and office for Paul. Knowing of Shields Buildings already, they were straight on the phone to discuss their ideas.
"Shields Buildings have made my dream a reality. From the bespoke design through to the installation of my office, John and his team were fantastic. Apart from the “no problem” attitude, they also offered some very useful advice about fitting out the interior. I now have a “Man Cave” that is everything I had hoped for – and the envy of friends and family!"
Paul Ward - Insulated WorkshopWhilst working from home has the advantage of no commuting and a better work/life balance it can be difficult to switch off if you don’t have a dedicated work zone. A great solution is to have a garden office, but home working requires more than a simple shed.
"As my office had to be compact I needed it designed to suit the space available and to the exact dimensions for my desk to sit under the window. The long side window was a lovely feature to give me more light and enjoy the views of my garden. The whole process of dealing with Shields Buildings was superb, from initial enquiry through to the completion of the job – thank you everyone!"
Mr Smith - Insulated Garden OfficeShields Buildings have worked with the National Trust on many occasions and contacted us when they wanted a brand new sales and reception building at Antony House at Torpoint in Cornwall. Following the success of the Alice in Wonderland filming that had been done they were expecting an increase in ticket sales.
"Thanks for yet another fantastic job. Everyone who has seen the building has admired it and was amazed at the speed of construction. Please pass on our thanks to your very professional team."
National Trust - Sales OfficeMr Flowers contacted us as he didn’t want a standard garage, but a combination building for use as a carport and workshop.
"I would like to say how pleased we are with the new garage and workshop. The price was extremely good and excellent value. Your workmen did an exceptional job in preparing and laying the groundworks and completing the garage and workshop with the minimum of fuss. I would definitely recommend Shields Buildings to anyone who wants a timber building."
Mr Flowers - Timber Carport and Workshop with Log StoreIn this case in particular, it was evident that the versatility of the bespoke design service that Shields Buildings offer would give this customer the perfect solution with his car parking shelter. A bespoke timber garage with open fronted tractor store was designed, built and installed near St Austell, Cornwall.
"Obviously a lot of thought has been put into the design of the components and this has made for straightforward erection of the building. Your team has been a pleasure to have on the site and every effort has been made to discuss with me the various stages of the erection of the building. Thank you, everyone, for the care you have taken."
Mr Stark - Bespoke Timber Garage and Tractor StoreWhen Mr and Mrs Miles Ambler moved into their dream house in Devon all they needed to complete the perfect picture was some additional space for their hobbies. Being new to the area their initial search for a timber frame garage was via the internet followed by a visit to the display area at Shields Buildings confirmed their impression of a professional business where attention to detail was key.
"All-in-all, we would have no hesitation in recommending Shields Buildings to anyone that appreciates attention to detail, enjoys being treated as a proper customer and wants an end-product of genuine quality."
Miles - Classic Garage and WorkshopHaving already purchased several bespoke timber garden buildings from Shields Buildings over the past 15 years, Liz knew that the standard of building, service and workmanship was second to none.
"The response after my initial enquiry was quick and efficient, with a site visit, plans and very reasonable quote done within just a couple of days. The team who built it have done a wonderful job and I’m absolutely thrilled with the result. I shall be using my new timber garden building as a textile art studio and John was most helpful in making sure there were suitably placed windows and roof lights to give me suitable lighting."
Liz - Cosy Art StudioMr B’s garden has some of the most beautiful views in Cornwall, over the Tamar estuary, and understandably, he wanted a garden room that allowed him to sit back, relax and enjoy the vista.
Mr W had admired his neighbour’s timber garden building for quite some time, so when he needed his own traditional timber garage, he knew exactly where to go!
Mr J had downsized from a house with plenty of storage space, to one with rather less.
However, with a decent amount of outside space, there was potential for a single garage, which could be used to store lots of the things the survived the move but didn’t fit in the house.
Mr G wanted somewhere to safely store his classic car, while also providing a space to work on it, so he spoke to us about creating a single-width garage that the car fits snugly in, as well as a workshop area at the end.
Mr B came to us with the aim of upgrading his existing concrete parking space to a carport that would protect his vehicles, together with a charging point for his electric car.
We designed the carport with an offset ridge, which makes it easy for solar panels to be added to it, allowing him to charge his electric car for free!
"I am delighted with our new carport, it is so nice to have a beautiful bespoke timber building of our own!"
