ZERO COMPOSITE GARDEN ROOMS - FEATURED CASE STUDIES
Our customer wanted a practical yet attractive garage that would provide secure storage for 1 vehicle, machinery and electric bikes, while making the most of the available space. Working closely with them, we designed a 5.5m x 5.8m Douglas Fir framed garage with bespoke shelving, carefully positioned windows and a personnel door tailored to their specific requirements.
Our customer in rural Somerset wanted a stylish garden room that would make the most of the spectacular rolling countryside views while providing a welcoming space for entertaining friends and family. Together, we designed a 7m x 3.5m composite-clad ZERO building with extensive glazing, including nine windows, a fully glazed entrance door and a full gable-end sliding door system.
Having previously purchased a building from us, our customer returned to Shields Buildings when moving to a new home on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park. Looking to replace and improve upon his previous garage, he chose a bespoke 6m x 5.3m design with increased 2.4m wall heights to accommodate a future campervan project, while also providing secure storage for his cherished vintage vehicles.
Mr B initially enquired about a carport for their new home. Shields collaborated closely with them over several display and site visits to refine a design that met their specific requirements. The customer then submitted a planning application to Mid-Devon Planning, which was happily approved.
Throughout the project, communication was seamless, with Shields staying well-informed about the base construction progress as well as the external tiler who was brought in to fit the roof tiles retrospectively, ensuring every detail was completed to the highest standard.
Our customer in West Somerset wanted a traditional open-fronted carport that would provide practical vehicle protection while complementing the character of their property. Based on our popular 6m x 5.3m design, we incorporated an Olive Green roof finish to meet the customer’s specific preferences and create a truly bespoke result.
Our customer in Cornwall was looking for a truly bespoke building that combined a practical garage, carport and secure storage solution within a single structure. Working closely with them, we developed a 6m x 5.3m design that incorporated a dedicated shed area within the garage and carefully selected synthetic slate roof finishes to complement the existing property.
After visiting our display site, the customer approached us looking for a bespoke garden room that could be used as a dedicated home gym. Working closely with them, we designed a spacious 6m x 4m building tailored to their requirements, including a non-standard Vandyke Brown roof to complement the home’s existing brown uPVC guttering and Rosewood coloured uPVC to create a cohesive finish.
From our first meeting, it was clear that the customer had a clear vision for a space that would be both practical and inviting — a building that could serve as a light-filled studio while also providing much-needed storage. Together, we explored a range of design options to create a bespoke garden studio and shed combination that complemented their home and garden in West Devon.
Our client needed a large storage building that would provide plenty of practical space for garden equipment, tools and household storage, while still complementing the appearance of their property. We worked together to create a bespoke 7m x 3m combination shed that delivered the functionality they required without compromising on quality or appearance.
Our client required a practical workshop that would fit within a very specific area of their garden, surrounded by established hedging and boundary walls. We worked closely with them to understand exactly how the space would be used, ensuring every aspect of the design was tailored to their requirements and the constraints of the site.
Our client wanted a stylish garden room that would make the most of their beautiful garden and surrounding views while fitting seamlessly into a challenging sloping site. Working closely with them, we designed a bespoke building layout that provided practical day-to-day access via a side entrance door, alongside a large sliding door opening directly onto the decking area.
Our client wanted to replace an ageing garden building and rotten decking area with a high-quality garden room that could be enjoyed throughout the year. Working closely with them from the outset, we developed a design that made the most of the available space while ensuring the finished building complemented both the garden and the property. We managed the entire project from start to finish, providing a single point of contact throughout.
When Mr and Mrs D visited our display site, they already had a clear vision: a space that could balance both practicality and creativity: a combined workshop and art studio.
After chatting through ideas with our team, the plans began to take shape, and we began turning the vision into reality.
Together, we refined the design, incorporating a few bespoke touches, including a neatmatch effect internal lining to the art studio roof at Mrs Ds’ request. It was a first for us here at Shields Buildings, and a great example of how truly tailored each project can be.
"From initial inquiry to the day of completion the service from Shields Buildings was first rate.
The build involved demolishing an existing shed and garage and replacing these with a studio and workshop. Shields took great care of the whole process. After a discussion and survey of our site by Shields we visited the show site to view their product range. The team were very helpful in making suggestions and improvements to our initial design and worked to save us money!
What’s more every member of the Shields team from concept to handing over keys have been a pleasure to deal with. We are delighted with the result. Five-star people, five-star product."
As with so many Shields projects, this one began with a visit to our display site, with Mr and Mrs B keen to explore the options for a carport and store.
Initially they were drawn to the classic look of an apex-roofed combination carport and garage, but after a few thoughtful and considerate chats with the neighbours about the height, they decided to go for a lower-profile pent roof instead.
It was a sensible choice — still practical, but a little kinder on the views, and the relationship with the neighbours too!
The structure was to be built on a 20-year-old concrete pad in front of the house, which meant planning permission was required. No stress there: our team handled the whole planning process from start to finish, so the customer didn’t have to get bogged down in forms or planning jargon.
"Excellent service from design to completion. Our carport and attached shed was designed to bespoke specifications to fit an existing hardstanding and sits beautifully on the site.
The whole team showed professionalism and consideration throughout the entire planning and building process.
A quality product and we are truly delighted with the result. We would highly recommend Shields Buildings."
This particular project is the culmination of over two years of planning, preparation and hard work, with all sorts of delays due to property chains and a few unexpected twists along the way. But we got there in the end, and the proof is in the pudding!
Early on in the process, we were able to offer some guidance around permitted development rules, which turned out to be a crucial step, avoiding the Joneses buying a property where they wouldn’t have been able to build the garage they really wanted.
As plans evolved, Mr and Mrs Jones visited our display site several times to fine-tune the design, making sure it was perfect for their new home.
"Can't speak highly enough of this company. It has been a long process due to our house move being delayed, but Shields have been very supportive throughout. Paul and Harry were a great help during the design phase and during the process of applying for planning permission. The construction team (Mike, Neil and Rafal) were great - friendly, helpful and great craftsmen. Similarly, the electrical team. The end product is absolutely superb! If you are considering using Shields - do it! You won't be disappointed."
Garage and Garden Store
On visiting our display site Mr and Mrs D were immediately drawn to our ZERO range – zero maintenance, zero planning, zero hassle.
They zeroed in (see what we did there?!) on a 5x3m studio, and the process began, with our team heading out for a site visit.
After ironing out some access issues, our team got to work, crafting the building on-site here at Shields Buildings, and delivering and assembling the ZERO studio, ready to be enjoyed by our customers.
"Just to let you know that Aaron and Neil finished the garden office/studio today and it looks amazing. We are really pleased with it.
The lads have done a fantastic job and worked so well and in some difficult conditions what with the ground and also the poor weather. They never complained and were real troopers and soldiered on regardless. Please pass on our thanks again to the team. "
The project began when Mr T and his wife visited us on one of our Open Saturdays and was impressed by the quality and variety of our timber buildings. Inspired by what they saw, they approached us with a vision for a highly bespoke garden room.
We worked closely with them to bring it to life and a 4m x 3.4m building with a 1.6m canopy and composite decking was created. It had to suit both the challenge of their sloping garden and provide suitable space for their lifestyle.
Through regular communication and a flexible approach, we ensured every detail reflected their needs, resulting in a truly unique and beautifully crafted garden room.
"The site team were truly remarkable, exceeded all expectations, were personable, friendly and extremely god at their job! They took the time to get it right which is always good to see."
Mr T's Garden Room
Mr F first approached us with detailed planning permission drawings for a substantial pent garage—measuring 11.8 metres in length and 6.7 metres in width—with four bays incorporating a dedicated internal log store area.
To ensure the design met every requirement, Mr F made several visits to our display site, with these meetings proving invaluable, allowing us to:
1 – Discuss the materials
2 – Refine the layout
3 – Ensure every element aligned precisely with the approved plans.
This hands-on approach ensured complete clarity at every stage, so we could deliver a bespoke structure that fulfilled the practical needs of the client and remained fully compliant with their planning permission.
"What a great company and team. From the initial enquiry through to the completed building, everything went as planned and the quality of the completed building is exceptional. The building was a bespoke design with several exceptions and challenges, but Paul and Harry incorporated these into the design from the outset. Weeks later it was turned into reality by the diligent site team of Mike, Aaron, Neil and Raf ensuring everything was completed to a high standard. It has been such a pleasure to have the Team at Shields Buildings undertaking this project."
Mr F's Pent Garage
This project started back in 2023 when a simple carport enquiry came in.
But, as often happens, other things got in the way, and it was another 12 months before the customers were ready to proceed.
As it turns out, while they were ready, it wasn’t quite plain sailing from that point on, as you’ll read below, but by working together with Shields, they got there in the end.
Mr C originally came to us with plans for a timber carport.
But as soon as he visited the display site, he was taken immediately by our ZERO garden room, recognising it as an ideal place to house his model railway set.
Following his initial visits, Mr C supplied detailed requirements and after another meeting at the display site and a few design phone calls, the ZERO stood out as the perfect choice.
"The process of choosing my garden room to completion was seamless, Shields kept me informed throughout and the installation team were amazing in their attention to detail in getting everything just right as well as being very polite and friendly. I can’t recommend Shields enough as the garden room exceeded my expectations and is admired by all that see it. The Zero garden room is a must for anyone who wants quality without planning and maintenance."
Mr C's ZERO Garden Room
Mr P arrived at our display site already keen on the ZERO – our turnkey, all-inclusive garden room option.
He was able to apply his own personal touches by choosing the colours of the external cladding and internal flooring. And then all that was needed was for one of our team to visit Mr P’s property to make sure everything would work and fit in his preferred spot.
Once confirmed, Mr P could sit back and relax and wait for installation.
"I had a Zero installed a couple of weeks ago. So far it is everything I expected, and the construction went as I was told it would. You couldn’t ask for more."

The customer in question had a good idea of what he wanted – a bespoke workshop that could be used partly for woodworking, and partly for exercise; two fairly diverse interests that needed tying together.
Nick visited the display site, with his drawings and designs, and together we came up with a building that fulfilled all the requirements.
The design itself was extremely bespoke, featuring an insulated floor by our team, with larger wall timbers so that the customer could insulate and line the rest himself, as and when he had the time to do so.
In addition, the design also featured internal partition walls, creating two separate rooms, with precise window and door placements in order to accommodate the customer’s woodworking machinery.
"The building looks great and is a credit to you and your team."

Mr G visited us on one of our Open Saturdays and was highly impressed by the garages on show – together we spent a long time looking at buildings, and working out the right options for him, as well as additions, like synthetic slate roof tiles and anthracite uPVC windows to help the garages blend in with the modern main building.
"We have just had two double garages installed. The quality of construction is excellent and from my research it shows that the specification is far better than some suppliers. The team that managed our planning, design and installation were easy to deal with, left no mess and always did everything on time. They also helped source a base provider and coordinated the installation with them. I strongly recommend Shields Buildings."

We recently had the honour of working with the wonderful Cath Kidston to create her a beautiful, attractive log store, and the end result is rather stunning.
Given the size, scale, and location of Cath’s log store, she needed to apply for planning permission. We took care of all that, taking the necessary photographs, submitting the plans, and getting it over the line, as well as providing base plans, so that her builder could install the foundations.
"We are delighted with the store, here’s a photo for you with it now pretty full of logs!"

Mr Barker and his partner were moving to a new build in North Tawton and had their heart set on an outdoor socialising area, which provided shade, while still allowing them to enjoy the warm weather.
Mr B had fond memories of a similar structure that his Nan had, which she’d always called a “loggia”.
After an initial call they came to see us at the display to discuss their plans – while our previous open-sided structures had all been for car parking, it was straightforward enough to modify the design to suit a garden structure.
"Great service from start to finish. The whole process was efficient and ran on time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good quality bespoke building. Shields Buildings deliver exactly what it say's on the tin - Thank You."

This one was a slightly different job, with Mrs Shields as the customer!
For a long time, Jacqueline wanted somewhere safe and dry to house her car, but with only a single carport, it wasn’t a possibility. With a new car on the horizon for 2021 it was now going to have to get to the top of the list of priorities.
Rather than installing another carport or garage and taking up more space, John and Jacqueline decided on a double carport, which would provide more than enough room for both vehicles.
James and Liz wanted a garden room they could use all year round, so they could enjoy the beautiful views of the moor from the top of their garden.
The room needed to be multipurpose – cosy enough to spend time and relax in when they were alone, and big enough to entertain their grandchildren in comfort.
"I'm sure when John first saw the site, his heart must have sunk as the access is awful and the site was on a slope. But with a lot of ingenuity the building is now finished and it's fabulous. Great team of specialist builders who turned up when they said they would turn up and smiled all the way through what must have been quite a testing job."
James and Liz's garden haven
With a damp and really useless old garage that was too small for her car and ruining her view Katherine wanted to replace it with a functional and more attractive timber garden building. A new building was designed which had the addition of a useful log store on the side.
"It is all fab, thank you for the shed, and the incredibly efficient and mess-free work getting rid of the old one and putting this up. I smile every time I look at the shed - SO much better and more attractive than what it replaced!"
Katherine -Large Shed
Having a lovely house and garden, Helen didn’t want the view ruined by a solid garage, but she did need somewhere to protect their cars from the weather. It was also key that the carport complemented the house, rather than looking like the odd one out.
"Once again, I must say how pleased we are with both the carport and the summerhouse. Not only are they perfectly designed for the job they do, as buildings they are also extremely handsome to look at and have been much admired. Please convey our thanks once again to all your team."
Helen - Open sided carport
Andrew, a professional artist in North Devon came to Shields Buildings and his brief was that we should create a proper wildlife artist’s studio for his stunning riverside setting. He wanted a large picture window to maximise views of the river, so we worked through a series of CAD designs and layouts before approving the final version together.
Within weeks of moving to their new home, Peter and Julie arrived at Shields Buildings to look at our display products. Being experts in outdoor buildings and storage solutions, we understood just how urgently they needed somewhere to put their possessions. The thing is, they didn’t know exactly what they were looking for, but wanted somewhere to protect their cars and to store their posessions. John was able to offer some useful suggestions for them.
"We’ve been so impressed with the service and quality of the work done by Shields. From start to finish the experience was fantastic. The fact that John Shields came to our property and carried out the survey and explained everything showed us that this company cared and gave personal service. We are so pleased with the end product and are making full use of the new space. Thanks to all the team!"
Mr and Mrs F - Insulated Storage Shed
Being a keen motorbiker Steve was looking for a new secure garage for his pride and joy and give him somewhere to store not only his bike clothing and gardening tools but a place to retreat to for a quick workout. Having been to see the display site at Shields Buildings Steve knew that he would get the quality and attention to detail for his timber frame garage that he was looking for.
"I love the idea of someone who does a full survey, draws up the plans, takes it from start to finish and makes it all simple for me – perfect."
Steve Williams - Bespoke Double Garage
Whilst working from home has the advantage of no commuting and a better work/life balance it can be difficult to switch off if you don’t have a dedicated work zone. A great solution is to have a garden office, but home working requires more than a simple shed.
"As my office had to be compact I needed it designed to suit the space available and to the exact dimensions for my desk to sit under the window. The long side window was a lovely feature to give me more light and enjoy the views of my garden. The whole process of dealing with Shields Buildings was superb, from initial enquiry through to the completion of the job – thank you everyone!"
Mr Smith - Insulated Garden Office
Shields Buildings, a trusted name for Timber Garden Workshops In The UK, have worked with the National Trust on many occasions and were contacted when they wanted a brand new sales and reception building at Antony House in Torpoint, Cornwall. Following the success of the Alice in Wonderland filming that had been done, they were expecting an increase in ticket sales.
"Thanks for yet another fantastic job. Everyone who has seen the building has admired it and was amazed at the speed of construction. Please pass on our thanks to your very professional team."
