One of my customers had a Shield Shed, and i was impressed with the Build quality. We made contact with Shields and visited their site at North Tawton. We were very impressed looking at the range of buildings in the flesh and this made our decision process much easier. Nothing was to much trouble, Paul Gent looked after us throughout our visit. We had a delay at our end, but this was not an issue. A date was confirmed and three great chaps arrived with a massive amount of timber, tools, and constructed our shed. They were very professional from start to finish, polite and courteous. They ran through everything i needed to know about the after care etc., and left the site spotlessly clean. I would highly recommend Shields BuildingsPosted on Google![]()

I had a Zero installed a couple of weeks ago. So far it is everything I expected and the construction went as I was told it would.Posted on Google![]()

The process of choosing my garden room to completion was seamless,Shields kept me informed throughout and the installation team were amazing in their attention to detail in getting everything just right as well as being very polite and friendly. I can’t recommend Shields enough as the garden room exceeded my expectations and is admired by all that see.it. The Zero garden room is a must for anyone who wants quality without planning and maintenance.Posted on Google![]()

Shields have just finished my double garage and I must say what an excellent job they have done. Paul from the start was excellent with great communication and prompt on site visits. Then the team who fitted it all together , Mike , Aaron & Jake worked together like a well oiled clock, quick, very clean and tidy and also great chaps who take pride in there work. If you are looking for a Timber Building I would say they are the best company to use truly first class from start to finish.Posted on Google![]()

We found Shields Buildings through Google Search Engine and we are very glad we did. We love our new shed and it's been built exactly to our specifications. From the minute I wrote the inquiry, Shields Buildings were very helpful and informative all the way through. From start to finish the process was seamless and worry free. The shed was built and put up with ease and the team kept our garden very clean and you would hardly notice they had been there all day. I would recommend Shields Buildings for all your Timber Garden buildings.Posted on Google![]()

'Quality bespoke timber buildings...' is the strapline and it is completely true. The design of our garden building evolved in discussion with John and his very professional team and the end result is superb: a lovely multi-use, 7x3.5m shingle-roofed natural timber garden room. The whole process, from initial chats thro' ordering and final installation was simple and enjoyable. The team who built it on site were great; considerate, polite, cheerful and very hard working (in atrocious weather) and when they departed, the site was, neat, tidy and the only thing left behind was a beautiful building! Highly recommended.Posted on Google![]()

John and his team have provided us with two excellent quality timber buildings. First a cart house plus adjoining shed to house our two cars and garden equipment and more recently a stand-alone 2.4m x 3m shed. What impressed us most was the care and detail applied to each order. John carried out a site visit on both occasions and helped us make various choices such as positioning, paint colours, roofing materials and guttering. We had some requirements of our own which he was more than happy to accommodate. He looked after all the planning requirements for the cart house which was a huge weight off our minds and kept us informed of its progress. The finished product has been much praised by all visitors and passers-by! The guys who look after the build and installation were extremely friendly, efficient and hard-working. The quality of their work is top class. In summary, then, a top quality product from a top quality company.
A building you never have to paint
Most garden buildings ask something of you every couple of years. A coat of stain, a look at the roof, a bit of making good where the weather has found its way in.
This one asks for none of that. The composite cladding will not rot, warp or need painting, and the doors and windows are uPVC, so there is nothing to rub down and treat. You get a building that looks much the same in ten years as it does on the day we hand it over, with nothing needed from you beyond an occasional wash down.
It is still made here at de Bathe Farm, still designed around your plot, and still installed by the same team that has been putting up our timber buildings since 1991.
Nothing to maintain
No painting, no staining and no annual treating. An occasional wash down is the whole job.
Horizontal cladding
A clean, modern line that sits well against newer homes and extensions.
Made to your size
You choose the dimensions, and you choose where the doors and windows go.
uPVC doors and windows
Single or double, arranged around how you will actually use the space.
Lined and ready inside
OSB walls take shelving, racking and a bench without you lining it out first.
Two roof options
Steel sheets at five degrees, or an EPDM rubber membrane at one degree.
Base included
We prepare the ground as part of the job, the same as every building we make.
Fitted by our own team
One company designs it, makes it and installs it. Nobody to chase.
Choose the roof that gives you the look you want
Steel sheets, five degree pitch
A crisp, slightly industrial profile that clears water quickly, so it suits an exposed plot or a spot under trees.
EPDM rubber, one degree pitch
An almost flat roof and a lower, more contemporary outline, which works well when you want the building to sit quietly at the end of the garden.
Both are built to last and neither one needs anything from you.
Three cladding finishes, plenty of colours
Spend a little more on the look where it matters and keep things simple where it does not. Anthracite greys and deeper blues suit a modern house, while softer tones sit more comfortably against stone and render.
Built around your plot, not the other way round
Standard sizes are fine until your garden has other ideas. A slope, a narrow side entrance, a boundary in an awkward place, a corner that would waste half the space.
Because every building is made to order, we can work with what you have got. Tell us what you need the space for and how much room there is, and we will design something that fits properly rather than nearly.
From the day you order, allow ten to twelve weeks until it is standing in your garden.
Composite or timber, which is right for you
| IF YOU WANT | LOOK AT |
|---|---|
| A storage or workshop building you never have to treat | Composite sheds and workshops, this page |
| The natural look of timber, and you do not mind the upkeep | Our timber sheds and workshop buildings |
| An insulated, decorated room you can work in all year | The ZERO composite garden room range |
We will happily tell you if one of the other three is the better fit. It is a long lasting purchase and there is nothing in it for us if you buy the wrong one.
OUR FIRST COMPOSITE DISPLAY IS TAKING SHAPE
We’re currently building our first Composite display building at our North Tawton display site.
We’ll be sharing the build as it progresses, from the timber structure through to the finished composite cladding, uPVC glazing and interior.
Once complete, you’ll be able to visit and see the materials, colours and construction for yourself.

Will I need planning permission
Often not. Many garden buildings fall within permitted development, and we design with those limits in mind. It does depend on the height, where the building sits in relation to your boundaries, and whether you are in a conservation area or have a listed property. We will check your situation properly rather than guess, and if an application is needed we can handle it for you.
How long will I wait
Typically, ten to twelve weeks from the day you place your order, including making the building and preparing your base.
Is it insulated
Not as standard. Sheds and workshops are built with quality and longevity in mind, perfect for storage or as a hobby space, with OSB lined walls ready for you to fix things to.
We do offer insulation, electrics and internal lining as well though as upgrades. Just get in touch and we can design the perfect spec for your needs.
How maintenance free is maintenance free
You will not need to paint it, stain it or treat it, and the cladding will not rot. Like anything outdoors it will collect dust and the odd cobweb, so an occasional wash down with soapy water keeps it looking new. That is the extent of it.
Can I have power in it
Absolutely! We can include electrical packs in all of our buildings and can even get our electrician to provide the sub main supply as well!
What does it cost
Prices start at around £8,500 inc VAT but we make every building to order, so to give you an exact price for your building please get in touch
Can I put one up myself
If you would rather arrange your own installation, we supply the same building as a kit with every fixing, full written and video instructions and phone support while you build it. Please get in touch to discuss this option.
Ready to talk it through
Tell us where you are and we will call you back to talk through what you need. No pressure, and no sales pitch.
Or call the workshop on 01837 82442 and speak to Paul.
