Garden Summer Houses are on a lot of peoples’ bucket lists, so they need to be perfect. We work with you to design, build and install a Summer House that surpasses expectations with a superior finish throughout.

There are 2 Summer House designs in the Shields Buildings range: the Salcombe, which is a super example of a cosy garden room with an attractive apex roof and the Sidmouth, which is a versatile Garden Summer House in a range of sizes with a robust pent roof.

Both buildings come unlined as standard, keeping the wood cladding visible, which gives a lovely rustic feel, or you can choose to have your Summer House lined with tongue and groove pine lining. Garden Summer Houses Frequently Asked Questions

A: Yes, garden summer houses from Shields Buildings can be fully customised to suit your specific needs and preferences. From choosing the size and layout to selecting the internal finish, you can create a bespoke summer house that gives you exactly what you want and complements your garden space perfectly.

A: To keep your garden summer house in top condition, regular maintenance is key. This includes cleaning the exterior and interior, treating the wood with a protective sealant, checking for any damage, cleaning gutters and ensuring proper ventilation to prevent moisture build-up.  When you choose Shields Buildings, we’ll guide you through the whole process and ensure you know exactly what you need to do to ensure your building stands the test of time.

A: While garden summer houses are primarily designed for use in the warmer months, with proper insulation and heating options, they can be used in the colder months as well. Adding insulation to the walls, floor, and roof, along with installing a heater, can help make your summer house cosy and comfortable even during winter.

A: In most cases, you do not need planning permission for a garden summer house, as long as it meets certain criteria such as being under 2.5m high if it’s within 2m of your boundary.  At Shields Buildings, we’re highly experienced when it comes to planning, so we can guide you through the whole process.

A: Garden houses are generally more versatile than regular sheds. They are designed to be more visually appealing and can be customised to suit your specific needs, often with insulation and double glazing.

The Base - with a floor

If your building comes with a timber floor built in, then all you’ll need is a level site for it to sit on.  We can discuss this when we do a site visit. Don’t worry about getting your spirit level out though – our trained installers will deal with that when they arrive to install your building.

The Roof

Unless you love getting rained on, a roof is pretty much a must, and the good news is that you’ll be well catered for – you can choose from natural looking artificial slate or long-lasting plastisol steel sheeting, all in a range of colours.

The Exterior Finishes

Left unpainted or stained and your exterior timber colour will naturally fade and soften over time.  Some like that, some don’t.  If you’d rather leave it natural, that’s totally fine, but if you’d prefer a colour that lasts and lasts, we can do that for you too.

The Interior - Flooring

Our oak engineered wood flooring is ideal for garden rooms, giving a floor that will withstand heavy footfall and offer many years of usage. Made from 3 layers of wood in a cross-gain lamination, it’s resistant to expansion and contraction.
