CASE STUDIES
Mr B initially enquired about a carport for their new home. Shields collaborated closely with them over several display and site visits to refine a design that met their specific requirements. The customer then submitted a planning application to Mid-Devon Planning, which was happily approved.
Throughout the project, communication was seamless, with Shields staying well-informed about the base construction progress as well as the external tiler who was brought in to fit the roof tiles retrospectively, ensuring every detail was completed to the highest standard.
From our first meeting, it was clear that the customer had a clear vision for a space that would be both practical and inviting — a building that could serve as a light-filled studio while also providing much-needed storage. Together, we explored a range of design options to create a bespoke garden studio and shed combination that complemented their home and garden in West Devon.
We recently had the honour of working with the wonderful Cath Kidston to create her a beautiful, attractive log store, and the end result is rather stunning.
Given the size, scale, and location of Cath’s log store, she needed to apply for planning permission. We took care of all that, taking the necessary photographs, submitting the plans, and getting it over the line, as well as providing base plans, so that her builder could install the foundations.
"We are delighted with the store, here’s a photo for you with it now pretty full of logs!"

Mr Barker and his partner were moving to a new build in North Tawton and had their heart set on an outdoor socialising area, which provided shade, while still allowing them to enjoy the warm weather.
Mr B had fond memories of a similar structure that his Nan had, which she’d always called a “loggia”.
After an initial call they came to see us at the display to discuss their plans – while our previous open-sided structures had all been for car parking, it was straightforward enough to modify the design to suit a garden structure.
"Great service from start to finish. The whole process was efficient and ran on time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good quality bespoke building. Shields Buildings deliver exactly what it say's on the tin - Thank You."

Shields Buildings, a trusted name for Timber Garden Workshops In The UK, have worked with the National Trust on many occasions and were contacted when they wanted a brand new sales and reception building at Antony House in Torpoint, Cornwall. Following the success of the Alice in Wonderland filming that had been done, they were expecting an increase in ticket sales.
"Thanks for yet another fantastic job. Everyone who has seen the building has admired it and was amazed at the speed of construction. Please pass on our thanks to your very professional team."

Combination Buildings Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are combination buildings?
A: Combination buildings are bespoke structures that offer a unique blend of different functionalities within a single building. These buildings are tailored to suit your individual needs and can combine various elements e.g. woodshed and workshop, or yoga studio and store.
Q: How are bespoke combination buildings different from traditional buildings?
A: Bespoke combination buildings are custom-designed to meet specific requirements, unlike traditional buildings that may have a standard layout or design. Combination buildings are ideal if you have multiple uses for your garden building and want to ensure that they’re catered for.
Q: What factors should be considered when designing buildings bespoke to individual needs?
A: When designing bespoke combination buildings, the place to start is with the available space, and what you’re planning to use your building for. Using this as the foundation, we can then work with you to understand layout, size and the specifics of the building.
Q: Are bespoke combination buildings cost-effective compared to traditional buildings?
A: While bespoke combination buildings may have a higher initial cost due to their custom nature, they can ultimately be more cost-effective in the long run. These buildings are designed to meet specific needs, which will result in a more efficient and functional building that you enjoy for many years to come.
Q: How can I get started on designing my combination building?
A: To begin the process of designing a bespoke combination building, the first place to start is by talking to us – just give us a call, send us an email or pop in and see us at de Bathe Farm in North Tawton. Together we’ll talk through your project, understand your needs and budget, and then start the process of designing your combination building – at Shields Buildings we do all the heavy lifting, from design, to manufacture to installation.
