When you’re thinking about building a new timber garden workshop, there are plenty of things to consider.
Where will it go? How big do you want it to be? Does it need windows? Heating? Lighting?
And possibly the biggest question is… do you need planning permission for your timber garden workshop?
Here at Shields Buildings, we’ve completed thousands of garden building projects, from a mere concept in people’s minds to installation and finishing.
We’ve encountered every challenge and obstacle you can think of… and overcome them all too.
Planning permission applications are something we regularly get asked about and if you’re looking for help in that department, we’re more than happy to oblige.
But you don’t necessarily need planning permission…
Do I Need Planning Permission For My Garden Building?
The assumption many people make when they’re looking at a new garden workshop is that you’ll need planning permission – but that’s often not the case.
You likely will not need permission if you:
- Opt for a garden building under 2.5m (if it’s beside or behind your house and less than 2m from your boundary)
- Site your garden building beside or behind your house and over 2m from your boundary (you can then opt for a building up to 4m high with a dual pitch roof or 3m high with a single pitch roof)
- OR Go for our brand new Zero range…
Essentially, you can’t build in front of your house and must adhere to the maximum height restrictions, which vary depending on how close you are to your boundary.
If you need or want to do any of those things, then you’ll need to go through the planning permission process – and the reality is that our timber workshop size options mean you’re likely to need planning permission.
Don’t worry, though, it is not as complicated as you might think.
We’ve helped hundreds of homeowners just like you build their dream timber garden workshops, as well as offices, sheds, carports, garages, studios and pretty much everything you can think of.
If you do require planning permission, we’re here to help ensure that goes as smoothly as possible.
We’ll pop along to assess your planned site, provide you with professional guidance on the process and make any recommendations, prepare your planning permission documentation, and make sure the entire process is as simple and smooth as it can be for you.
And if you’re looking for an alternative to timber, then our ZERO range might just be the thing for you…
With zero planning, zero maintenance, and zero hassle, it’s a garden building you can rely on standing the test of time without any worries.

Timber Workshops – Are They Worth It?
Finding the right timber workshop might seem like an obvious suggestion, but it does make all the difference.
The good news is that we work with you to design and create a unique timber garden workshop that’s purpose-built to suit you down to the ground.
There’s no making do with what you have, it’s all about crafting the perfect space for you to paint, create, tinker, sew, design, mend, store, and craft to your heart’s content.
We’ve worked on all sorts of projects, so whatever your goal is, let us know!
We work from the bottom up with every timber garden workshop project and it’s all crafted specifically for you before installation, so you can have a say on every element.
If you are opting for a workshop, you won’t need planning permission if you have it further than 2m from your boundary, or if it is within 2m then keep it under 2.5m high.
Sheds are smaller, but generally, our workshops are over 3.5m x 3m, which means they’re classed as ‘larger buildings’. That’s great news for you because it means that whatever you’ve got planned, you’ve got more than enough space to do it.
Well, within reason, of course.
It can also be insulated so that when it inevitably gets dark, wet, and cold for half of the year, you can make sure you’re still comfortable as you make use of it.
The choice you’ve got to make is whether a 3.5m x 3m or a 4m x 3m timber workshop better suits your needs – and we can help you there.
At Shields Buildings, we’ve been creating great spaces on the land we’ve farmed for more than 100 years.
We’re a family business that’s been doing this for generations and we know a thing or two about the importance of good craftsmanship, which is why we know our timber workshops are the ideal solution for you that will withstand all the elements have to throw at them.
