Plan Ahead: Why Now is the Best Time to Start Planning your Bespoke Garden Building with Shields Buildings
So, you want a bespoke timber carport or garage and don’t know where to start? Then look no further, as we have the answers!
At Shields Buildings we have been designing and installing timber garden buildings since 1991. We have over 30 years of experience to help and guide you, and that’s exactly what we’ll do. So how does it work?
Why it’s worth investing in a Garage or Carport
Steps to Planning Your Bespoke Timber Carport
It all starts with a phone call or a visit to our Display site here at the farm just outside North Tawton, Devon. We’ll talk through your ideas and ask a few key questions:
- Where is your carport going? In general, if it’s in front of your property, or within 2m of your boundary, you are likely to need Planning Permission
- What size building do you want?
- Are there any additional features you are interested in i.e. synthetic slate roof, oak frontage, or stained finish? These are touches that personalise your building to make it your own.
- Do you want electricity in your carport i.e. for an electric charging point?
- What is the access to your property like where the building will be situated?
- What’s your budget?
Once we get the ball rolling and you’ve given us the outline of what you’d like we can get to work discussing the finer points with you, to provide a personalised quotation. All our buildings are made to order, so you can have the exact size that suits you and the space that you have available.
Creating Your Bespoke Timber Carport
At this point, or just after we have prepared an initial quotation, we will visit the site and make sure that your dream wooden carport or garage will be situated in the best possible place. If you do need Planning Permission, we can take this burden off your shoulders and submit the application for you. We will take lots of measurements during the site visit, so we have everything we need to work with.
We will then prepare your fully itemised quotation. This includes the sizes relating to your building and details of any accessories. The price will include delivery and installation. However, we also offer a delivery-only service if this is better suited to your budget.
Quotes come with CAD drawings to make it easy for you to see exactly what your carport or garage will look like, along with all the dimensions. Our customers find them very useful in their decision-making process.
We have as many conversations with you as you’d like to make sure that we have interpreted all your requirements accurately. We are happy to make any changes to the quote as we want to make sure you have your dream timber carport exactly as you want it.
Do I need to apply for planning permission for garden buildings?
Finalising Your Timber Garden Building
Once you are happy with the size and specification of your building, all you need to do is pay your deposit. Then it’s all systems go! We will agree on the delivery date and then get to work. All our timber buildings are made here on the farm by our team of experienced craftsmen, using the finest grade pressure-treated eastern European redwood from renewable sources.
Never fear, we don’t forget about you whilst you are waiting for your building to be installed. We will keep in regular contact with you and update you with progress along the way.
Timber carports and garages generally require a concrete pad for the base. We will provide your builder with the plans for this in advance of the installation date.
