CASE STUDY

Pent Carport and Store

Working Together

As with so many Shields projects, this one began with a visit to our display site, with Mr and Mrs B keen to explore the options for a carport and store.

Initially they were drawn to the classic look of an apex-roofed combination carport and garage, but after a few thoughtful and considerate chats with the neighbours about the height, they decided to go for a lower-profile pent roof instead.

It was a sensible choice — still practical, but a little kinder on the views, and the relationship with the neighbours too!

The structure was to be built on a 20-year-old concrete pad in front of the house, which meant planning permission was required. No stress there: our team handled the whole planning process from start to finish, so the customer didn’t have to get bogged down in forms or planning jargon.

Overcoming Obstacles

Planning permission can feel daunting, but our general manager Paul took it all in his stride. He prepared and submitted the application, liaised with the council, and made sure every requirement was ticked off. One key rule was fire safety, which meant the building had to sit at least a metre away from the boundaries.

On top of that, the footprint was dictated by the existing concrete pad — so our design team worked carefully to make the building fit perfectly. The end result was a bespoke 5.9m x 5.2m structure, split into a generous 3.15m carport and a 2.05m enclosed store, providing the customer exactly what they wanted when they first came to visit.

What Was Achieved

The finished building is a great example of tailoring a design to suit the customer’s needs while also being flexible and pragmatic about the existing site and the context the building now sits on. The design and installation made the most of the existing concrete base without losing an inch of usable space, and the pent roof design preserves those awesome estuary views.

Mr and Mrs B now have a practical, attractive solution that does exactly what they need it to — and blends beautifully with its surroundings. Once again, proof that thoughtful design, expert craftmanship and a good dose of teamwork can make all the difference!

"Excellent service from design to completion. Our carport and attached shed was designed to bespoke specifications to fit an existing hardstanding and sits beautifully on the site.
The whole team showed professionalism and consideration throughout the entire planning and building process.
A quality product and we are truly delighted with the result. We would highly recommend Shields Buildings."
