Mr B initially enquired about a carport for their new home. Shields collaborated closely with them over several display and site visits to refine a design that met their specific requirements. The customer then submitted a planning application to Mid-Devon Planning, which was happily approved.
Throughout the project, communication was seamless, with Shields staying well-informed about the base construction progress as well as the external tiler who was brought in to fit the roof tiles retrospectively, ensuring every detail was completed to the highest standard.
Overcoming Obstacles
One of the key challenges was constructing a tile-ready carport. Typically, Shields installs tiles ourselves using a synthetic slate option, but the customer wanted to use their existing roof tiles.
To accommodate this, we manufactured a slate-ready structure, utilizing thicker, stronger timbers and reinforcing every wall panel with hardwood ply sheets. The roof rafters were also designed to support tiles, which would be installed by an external tiler.
There was some back-and-forth communication with the Planning office, requiring adjustments to the design to meet their regulations. However, after refining the plans, an agreement was reached between the customer, Shields, and the planning office, resulting in a beautiful carport that seamlessly matched the customer’s home aesthetic.
What Was Achieved
Over the course of 12 months, the project progressed smoothly from initial enquiry to completion. The customer moved into their new home, submitted a planning application, and saw the base installation, building construction, and roofing installation unfold seamlessly. Multiple agencies collaborated to bring the customer’s vision to life, with the carport incorporating his own roof tiles for a personal touch. The result is a stunning carport that combines modern design with traditional elements, perfectly complementing the home and its surroundings.
